“The chains of habit are too light to be felt until they’re too heavy to be broken” Warren Buffet.

Whilst you’re excited and ready for a new year ask yourself an important question: What are you willing to give up? If you want to keep moving forward, you’ll need a strong dose of courage to change those habits and routines that are holding you back.

Remind yourself of the lesson of impermanence - nothing lasts. This lesson is contrary to human nature, our instinct is to resist change, we try to keep our kids from growing up too fast, we fight the natural ageing process, and we hold on to romantic relationships long after we realise its best for us to move on. But impermanence is an unavoidable law of nature, and the more we resist change the more difficult we make our lives.

As Thich Nhat Hahn stated, “it is not impermanence that makes us suffer, what makes us suffer is wanting things to be permanent when they are not”. Remind yourself to embrace the transient nature of life, do your best not to cling to the things you want to last, rather experience them as fully as you can as they happen and gracefully let them go as they naturally come to an end.

As your world continues to change around you don’t be the one left standing still.

What are you willing to give up?

Now set to it, today is the first of many great days.
