Like any industry, recruitment can have its ups and downs. We all have those days when everything seems to go right, candidates are happy, clients are happy and the perfect match is found; however, there are days when no matter how prepared you are, the day gets away with you and ends up a complete nightmare! I believe getting ahead of the game and organising for your day can certainly help.
Having a good start to your work day and how you begin your morning can often set the tone for the rest of the day. Getting to work on time helps your mindset and allows you to plan for the day. I know myself if I am running late my whole day seems to run out of control and I end up feeling frantic. It also means I am not the positive person I need to be for the team so being aware of your mood when you arrive is important. As a team, we have a saying: ‘put your positive pants on,’ and this means snap out of it!
My first hour of the day is the time where I assess what is urgent and what needs to be accomplished. I clear my emails, check voicemail messages and set my calendar up so I keep to my schedule. I make a to-do list and carry over those tasks I did not do the day before, and most importantly, I have my coffee (or two…) Knowing I have done this means that if I have something urgent that comes and changes my day, I have a better mindset to cope. Little things like keeping your desk clear and organised, and having a quick buzz with the team can set the tone for the day and means you have your own game plan.
As the saying goes ‘By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.’
