As a Founder, CEO and recruiter I have had the privilege of working with many clients over the years taking and shaping job briefs. There is one area I would love organisations to think more about when they are scoping their role and that is simply, what does success look like?
I always ask clients what will success look like for this role in the first 3 months, 6 months and 12 months and it is a question many struggle to articulate. They know its important but few have stopped to reflect what they need to see.
Understanding the measurement of success is a must, not just for you the manager but for the individual taking the role and of course whoever is tackling your recruitment.
As a manager, you need to have a clear picture of what you need them to achieve across those timeframes - is it an increase in customer engagement? is it winning 5 new customers, is it delivering a completed content calendar.
Being able to articulate what you need allows the recruiter to understand the demands of the role and the objectives and identify the right talent to deliver.
Equally no individual wants to start a role without clear expectations of what’s required. In fact, most candidates will identify that one of their top three criteria in choosing their next role will be having clear expectations or vision on what needs to be achieved. They know the how may be left up to them but they certainly need to understand the what.
So, before you make that critical next hire take a moment to be clear and concise on what success looks like. I guarantee it won't be wasted time.
