It struck me whilst reading another great post from Bernard Marr that Data Analytics and Sport are the ultimate bedfellows. Both disciplines are regimented by rules, numbers, patterns and processes, garnering swaths of passionate followers eager to engage with the latest news.
Anyone that has seen Moneyball knows that the principle of using numbers to better drive a sports team is always going to create issues with the traditionalists that go with the gut over the spreadsheet.
But there’s no escaping it, the sports analytics industry is huge business. The vast quantity of data currently available to glean valuable insights from means the battle for competitive advantage is now the sport of the Analysts.
And as data collection has improved, people are turning more and more to computer algorithms to predict the outcome of the game.
