This week I had a meeting in Dubai with an AI startup, and I came out pleasantly surprised.
Since moving to the Middle East, I've often found that companies talk a lot about cutting edge technology, Machine Learning, AI, IoT, Blockchain, but it's usually little more than hot air. However, over the last 6 months, companies seem to be getting to grips with these and making tangible, commercially viable businesses off the back of them.
During my meeting, I met people who had turned down jobs with the likes of Google, Amazon, and Facebook to join them, purely due to the projects that they are involved in.
We also find that many of the startups making waves in the UAE are backed by the Government, showing that the continuous drive for technology innovation is coming right from the top.
Aisha Bin Butti Bin Bishr, the Director-General of the Smart Dubai office, believes that the UAE will generate the equivalent of $9bn purely due to Digital Transformation.
Bin Bishr said that the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy is an important cornerstone of UAE Centennial, describing it as pivotal for enhancing government performance and creating an innovative environment by introducing artificial intelligence technologies in different fields, both governmental and private.
