Why do we not listen to each other? The first reason is because we'd rather talk! The average person talks 225 words per minute, but we can listen to 500 words per minute so our minds are filling in those other 275 words.
It takes effort and energy to actually pay attention to someone. If you work harder on your listening skills your audience will be more grateful and your time will be more memorable. Otherwise, you are simply not in the conversation.
We have all heard the adage "we have two ears and one mouth for a reason".
Steven Covey said, "most of us don't listen with the intent to understand, we listen with the intent to reply".
Be interested in other people.
Get yourself out there and listen to people.
Keep your mouth shut as often as you can.
Keep your mind open.
Always prepare to be amazed.
